Great Ocean Road
8th - 10th March 2001

This was a 3 day getaway to see the Great Ocean Road and the Twelve Apostles. A quick journey down the Hume Highway saw us bypass Melbourne and head for the coast via Geelong before hitting the start of the road at Torquay. The road hugs the coastline until Apollo Bay where it cuts inland through the Otway Ranges National Park. It was along this stretch that we detoured to visit Cape Otway Lighthouse, which is the oldest surviving lighthouse on mainland Australia, having been in continuous operation since 1848.
Continuing westwards, we reached the famous 12 Apostles where we took the obligatory sunset photos before heading for Port Campbell and a motel for the night.
The next morning we splurged on a helicopter ride over the Apostles to give a totally different perspective of these magnificent formations.
Returning the way we had come, we couldn't understand why there was so much traffic heading north out of Melbourne on a Friday afternoon, until we realised that this was the start of a long weekend for Victoria. It took us a while to find a motel that wasn't fully booked, but finally found one at Seymour. The next day saw us head east through the Bemboka Valley to the east coast near Bega before turning north and heading home.
